Marine Fire-Retardant Plywood
Definition for plywood:
The plywood is composite board is manufactured by bonding three or more 1mm-thick wood veneers or thin sheets under heat and pressure. It has become the predominant material in artisanal furniture craftsmanship due to its structural reliability. There is two types plywood, one is standard plywood, another one is marine fire retardant plywood.
The production process involves two primary methods: rotary-cutting logs into continuous veneers or planing wood blocks into thin layers, followed by adhesive lamination of three or more plies.Notably, manufacturers typically employ an odd number of layers (e.g., 3, 5, 7) with adjacent veneers arranged perpendicularly in grain orientation, significantly enhancing dimensional stability.
What is marine fire-retardant plywood?
Marine fire-retardant plywood is engineered for marine vessel construction, featuring intrinsic flame-retardant properties that significantly inhibit flame propagation and enhance fire safety compliance. This specialized material achieves its fire resistance through a multilayer structure containing phenolic resin-impregnated veneers and flame-suppressant additives embedded within cross-linked polyethylene capsules.
Structure and material for marine fire-retardant plywood:
1>Core structure
1.Multi layer composite architecture
- Using 5-9 layers of rotary cut veneer (thickness 0.8-1.5mm) and odd layer arrangement to achieve mechanical balance.
Adjacent single board fibers intersect vertically to enhance deformation resistance and shear strength.
2.Flame retardant functional layer
- The surface veneer is impregnated with phenolic resin to form a 0.1-0.3mm flame-retardant protective film.
Core board embedded with cross-linked polyethylene capsules (diameter 50-200 μ m), containing ammonium phosphate flame retardant particles.
3.Enhance layer configuration
- Add fiberglass mesh cloth (weight 80-120g/㎡) to the middle layer to enhance impact resistance by 17%.
The key load-bearing parts are made of high-strength birch or eucalyptus veneer (density ≥ 650kg/m ³).
2>Key material composition
Material Type | Technical Specification | Function Feature |
| Basic wood | Pine/Birch/Eucalyptus (moisture content ≤ 8%) | Provide basic mechanical support, resistant to seawater corrosion. |
| Adhesive | Phenolic resin (solid content 45% -55%), cured at high temperature to form a three-dimensional cross-linked network. | Realize high-strength interlayer bonding, resistant to 100 ℃ humid and hot environment. |
| Flame retardant | Compound of ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and magnesium hydroxide (MH) in a ratio of 3:1, with an addition amount of ≥ 15% | Upon contact with fire, it expands to form a 50-100 fold carbonized layer, with a maximum oxygen index of ≥ 35%. |
| Waterproof coating | Two component epoxy resin (thickness 0.2-0.5mm), salt spray resistance test ≥ 2000 hours. | Block moisture infiltration and maintain dimensional stability of the board (expansion rate ≤ 0.5%) |
Performance verification indicators for marine fire retardant:
All technical parameters are verified according to the DNV-GL/ABS standard for ship construction specifications.
Fire resistance performance | Mechanical properties | Environmental tolerance |
| Meets GB 8624-2012 standard B1 level, with a combustion growth rate index (FIGRA) of ≤ 250W/s 58 | Static flexural strength ≥ 35MPa (longitudinal)/25MPa (transverse), elastic modulus ≥ 6000MPa 2 | After 72 hours of salt spray test (5% NaCl solution), there were no bubbles or layers on the surface |
| Smoke density rating (SDR) ≤ 75, smoke toxicity reaches quasi safe level (ZA3) 58 | Surface wear resistance ≥ 4000 revolutions per minute (H18 grinding wheel), screw grip force ≥ 1200N/mm 12 | After 100 cycles of weather resistance testing (-30 ℃ to 80 ℃), the strength loss rate is ≤ 8% |
Why fire retardant plywood can be used in ship?
Effectively prevent the spread of flames, improve the fire safety of ships, and have excellent environmental friendliness.
1> Fire rating and combustion characteristics
1.Core fire rating
Marine fire-resistant plywood usually reaches B1 level (fire-resistant material),meeting the “Classification of Burning Behavior of Building Materials and Products” (GB 8624-2012) standard, which can significantly delay the spread of fire and reduce the release of smoke and toxic gases in a fire. Some high-end products can approach Class A (non combustible material) performance through special treatment (such as phenolic resin impregnation), but the cost is relatively high.
2.Combustion inhibition mechanism
①Flame retardant function: By adding flame retardants such as ammonium polyphosphate and magnesium hydroxide, the material decomposes and absorbs heat at high temperatures, reducing surface temperature and forming an expanded carbonization layer, blocking the contact between oxygen and combustibles.
②Physical barrier: The surface flame-retardant protective film (such as epoxy resin coating) can isolate oxygen and delay the combustion rate by 36.
2>Certification and Applicable Scenarios
International Standard Certification
It needs to be certified by DNV-GL,ABS and other classification societies, and meet the mandatory testing requirements of “Flame retardant Plywood” (GB/T 18101-2024) and “Burning Performance Requirements for Flame retardant Products and Components in Public Places” (GB 20286-2006).

Application for the plywood:
1>Construction field
①Public buildings
Application scenario:Used for walls, ceilings, and decorative panels in high-rise buildings, shopping malls, hospitals, schools, and other places, utilizing their high fire rating (B1 level ) and thermal insulation performance to reduce fire risks.
②Special functional buildings
Government buildings and cultural and sports venues: Due to the need to comply with national mandatory fire prevention standards,fire-resistant plywood is used for partitions, ceilings, and other parts to ensure that the spread of fire is delayed in case of a fire.
2>Ship field
①Cabin structure
As a cabin wall, partition, and decorative panel, its non-metallic properties reduce the weight of the ship (density ≥ 650kg/m ³), and there is no toxic gas release during combustion, which meets the safety requirements of ship confined spaces.
②Marine furniture
Fire retardant plywood, with its comprehensive advantages of fire resistance, lightweight, corrosion resistance, and low toxicity, has become the core material of ship furniture. It can ensure safety and meet the functional and aesthetic needs under complex working conditions.
